Dental Exams and X-Rays

Usually, in coordination with your routine dental cleanings, dental exams and x-rays are required for maintaining healthy gums and teeth. Dental exams and x-rays will help to keep the financial burden associated with more complicated treatments down since they are a preventative measure. The Academy of General Dentistry recommends dental exams to be performed twice yearly for people of all ages so that dentists can catch any oral health complications at their earliest stages.

How it’s done

Following your routine cleaning from one of our highly-trained dental hygienists, one of our skilled Antioch dentists will examine your mouth visually using dental equipment including mirrors, assorted tools, and high-intensity lights. He or she will look for cracked or decaying teeth and will also perform an oral cancer screening by examining the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues and gums.

Any evidence of periodontal or gum disease will also be assessed by checking the gums and bone around the teeth. If you have any current fillings, crowns, or other restorations, they will also be checked on to make sure they are in good order. The dentist will also consider and review other important medical information including your medical history or new medical conditions and illnesses that may affect your dental health.

Additionally, diagnostic x-rays will be taken in order to reveal any other hidden problems below the gums that are not visible to the naked eye. Bitewing x-rays are taken every 12 months while a panographic x-ray, which revolves around the head, is taken every 3-5 years.
